Highways link Ranchi with Kolkata (about 400 km, 9 to 10 hours by bus) and Patna (about 328 km, about 8 hours). Many private AC and non-AC buses run daily from Kolkata.
By train
Ranchi Junction and Hatia are the two main stations, with trains to Kolkata, Delhi and other big cities. New Delhi to Ranchi takes about 17 to 19 hours; Howrah to Ranchi about 8 to 9 hours.
By air
Birsa Munda Airport is at Hinoo, about 5 to 7 km from the city centre, with direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata and other cities.
Where to base yourself
Stay in central Ranchi around Main Road, Lalpur or Gosaintola, close to the station, the lake and the roads out to the falls.

Getting around

  • Auto-rickshaws, cycle rickshaws and taxis can be hired around the city; Shared cabs and autos are the cheapest option.
  • City buses run within Ranchi and to nearby towns; buses and jeeps to the Sun Temple leave from Birsa bus terminal.
  • For the waterfalls a private cab or a hired car for the day is the easiest option, as shared transport to the falls is limited.

Safety

By day
The city and main sights are generally busy and fine in daytime. Take care on the steep, slippery steps at the waterfalls.
At night
Plan to be back from the waterfalls and Patratu area before dark; one source advises against travelling there after dark.
Solo women
Use usual city precautions and pre-booked cabs for trips to the falls.
Roads
Main highways from Kolkata and Patna are in good condition. Ghat roads and forest roads near the falls are narrow and best driven in daylight.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)

Practical

Mobile network
Major mobile networks work in the city; coverage near the waterfalls can be patchy.
ATMs and cash
ATMs are common in the city. Carry cash before heading to the waterfalls.
Fuel
Fuel stations are available in the city and along the highways. Fill up before trips to the falls.
Medical
Ranchi, as the state capital, has the nearest large hospitals. There are no facilities at the waterfalls, so carry a first-aid kit.

Coverage maps: Jio · Airtel · Vi · BSNL. Report a problem

Accessibility

Seniors
City sights are easy, but the waterfalls involve hundreds of steep steps down and back up, and Pahari Mandir has about 300 to 400 steps.
Children
The lake, Rock Garden and Birsa zoo suit children. Keep a close watch near the water at the falls.
Wheelchair users
Most waterfalls and hill temples are reached only by steps. Ranchi Lake promenade is the most accessible sight.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Jharkhand is home to more than thirty indigenous communities; respect village life and ask before taking photos of people.
  • Dress modestly and remove shoes at temples such as Pahari Mandir and Jagannath Temple.
  • Do not swim at Dassam or Hundru during high flow; strong currents have made swimming unsafe.
  • Carry your rubbish back from the falls, as facilities there are limited.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and socks for hot stone floors where shoes come off. Some temples do not allow phones or bags, so carry little
  • Some cash in small notes for autos, stalls and tips
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
