FamousPilgrimageHeritageTrek

Deoghar draws Shiva devotees to Baba Baidyanath Dham, a Jyotirlinga and Shakti Peetha, especially during the monsoon Shravan pilgrimage. Around the town are small hills such as Trikut, Tapovan and Nandan Pahar for short treks and views. It suits pilgrims, families and anyone who wants a short, simple temple trip from Kolkata or Patna.

Accessibility

Seniors
The temple and town sights are manageable, but long queues and crowds can be tiring; visit outside Shravan.
Children
Nandan Pahar has a park with rides and boating that suits children. Watch children closely in temple crowds and around monkeys on Trikut.
Wheelchair users
Hill sights such as Trikut and Tapovan involve steps and rough paths.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Dress modestly and remove footwear at temples.
  • The Shravan pilgrimage in the monsoon brings huge crowds; plan rooms and trains well ahead.
  • Many fairs are held through the year, including Shivratri, Shravana Sombari and Durga Puja.
  • Photography may be restricted inside sanctums; ask before taking pictures.
  • Do not feed the monkeys on the hills and keep food and phones out of sight.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Walking shoes with a good grip, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and socks for hot stone floors where shoes come off. Some temples do not allow phones or bags, so carry little
  • Some cash in small notes for autos, stalls and tips
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
