A small Bundela-era town on the Betwa river, full of palaces, temples and royal cenotaphs.
FamousHeritagePilgrimageRiverWildlife
Orchha packs a 16th and 17th century fort complex, painted temples and a row of riverside cenotaphs into a walkable town only about 17 km from Jhansi. It suits history and architecture lovers, photographers and pilgrims visiting the Ram Raja Temple, where Rama is worshipped as a king. It is calm, compact and easy to see in a couple of days.

What to expect
October to March
Pleasant and cool weather, the most popular time for sightseeing. Winter evenings are cool.

Monsoon rain turns the river banks and the sanctuary green and misty. MP Tourism promotes this season, but some outdoor activities may be limited.

Safety
By day
Orchha is a small, quiet tourist town. Watch your belongings in temple crowds and keep food away from the monkeys at the monuments.
At night
The market around Ram Raja Temple stays busy until the evening darshan ends; lanes and the riverside are dark later, so carry a torch.
Solo women
No specific safety information was found. Usual care applies: stay in well-reviewed places and avoid isolated riverside spots after dark.
Roads
The Jhansi to Orchha road is short and on the main Jhansi to Khajuraho route. Take care on the Betwa banks and rocks, especially in the monsoon.
