Culture and responsible travel

  • Mobile phones, cameras and large bags are not allowed inside the Mahakaleshwar complex; use the lockers near the gates.
  • For jalabhishek in the inner sanctum men wear a dhoti and women a saree; ordinary darshan has no dress code, but modest clothing is advised.
  • Do not photograph rituals or sadhus intrusively.
  • Wear easy slip-on footwear, avoid metal accessories and strong perfumes, and carry little to speed up security checks.
  • Hindi is widely spoken; bargaining of about 10 to 20 percent is common in markets.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and socks for hot stone floors where shoes come off. Some temples do not allow phones or bags, so carry little
