The ghats at Maheshwar

Destinations / Madhya Pradesh

Maheshwar

Ahilyabai Holkar's riverside capital, with a fort above long Narmada ghats and handwoven Maheshwari sarees.

Lesser-knownHeritageRiverPilgrimage

Maheshwar was the capital of Rani Ahilyabai Holkar in the late 18th century. Her fort and palace rise above wide stone ghats on the Narmada, lined with temples and chhatris, and the town still weaves the Maheshwari saree. It is quiet and slow, and fits well between Omkareshwar and Mandu.
