Getting there

By bus
Sonamarg is about 80 km from Srinagar on NH 1D via Ganderbal and Kangan, about 2.5 to 3 hours by car. A daily bus runs from Srinagar around 8 am in season (about Rs 150, 5 to 6 hours), and shared taxis go via Kangan (about Rs 190 in total).
By train
Sonamarg has no station. Holidify points to Jammu Tawi (about 300 km) with a bus or cab onward; check current rail options to Srinagar before planning.
By air
Srinagar airport is the nearest, about 70 to 80 km away, roughly 3 hours by taxi. Delhi to Srinagar flights take about 1.5 hours.
Where to base yourself
Stay in or near the main market, where budget rooms, the taxi stand and the pony start for Thajiwas are close together.

Getting around

  • Srinagar taxis cannot go beyond the market, so use local union taxis from the Sonamarg taxi stand.
  • Union taxi to Zoji La and Zero Point and back costs about Rs 4,000 to 5,000 per vehicle.
  • A local round of Fish Point, Sarbal and the town costs about Rs 2,000 per vehicle; Fish Point alone is about Rs 600 return.
  • Ponies to Thajiwas Glacier cost about Rs 700 to 1,500 return in peak season and Rs 500 to 800 off-season; agree the price before setting off.
  • The glacier is also an easy-to-moderate walk of about 3 km each way.

On the way

Worth a stop on the drive from Srinagar, the last stretch whether you arrive by train, bus or air. Stopping needs a taxi or your own vehicle; buses do not wait. Distances are by road.

Permits and documents

No permit was found for the town or Thajiwas trail. Carry photo ID for checks on the highway. Private vehicles may not go beyond the market, so use union taxis. Avoid flying drones near the Srinagar-Leh highway.

Safety

By day
Generally safe for tourists. The Sindh is fast and very cold, so do not wade in deep water.
At night
The town is small and quiet at night. Stay near the market and avoid walking on the highway after dark.
Solo women
No specific concerns were found online. Use registered union taxis and agree pony prices in advance.
Roads
NH 1D can be narrow and crowded near Ganderbal, and the road past Sonamarg to Zoji La is rough and seasonal. Yatra traffic in July and August brings restrictions.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)

Practical

Mobile network
Reports differ: one guide says all networks give 4G, another says signal is weak. Expect no signal on the glacier trail or at Zero Point; download offline maps.
ATMs and cash
A J&K Bank branch with an ATM is in the market but can run out of cash. Ponies and taxis take cash only, so bring cash from Srinagar.
Fuel
No petrol pump in Sonamarg. The nearest is at Gagangeer, about 10 km away.
Medical
A Primary Health Centre and dispensaries serve the town. Serious cases go to Srinagar, about 80 km away.

Coverage maps: Jio · Airtel · Vi · BSNL. Report a problem

Accessibility

Seniors
The town and river bank are easy, and ponies can carry visitors to the glacier. Zero Point is high, so walk slowly and carry water.
Children
Good for children who like snow and sledges. Keep them away from the river edge.
Wheelchair users
The market and roadside viewpoints can be seen from a vehicle, but trails to the glacier and Table Top are unpaved and not wheelchair friendly.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Kashmir is mostly Muslim; dress modestly and be respectful near mosques and shrines.
  • Agree on pony and taxi prices before starting, and pay in cash.
  • Do not leave litter on the glacier or by the lakes; carry waste back to town.
  • Expect crowds and security checks during the Amarnath Yatra in July and August.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • A warm layer for the evenings, which are cool even in summer
  • Waterproof shoes with grip if you go in the snow months
  • Walking shoes with a good grip, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle
  • Enough cash for the whole stay, a power bank and offline maps
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
