A Kashmir valley town on the Lidder river, with pine forests, meadows and side valleys.
FamousMeadowRiverTrekPilgrimage
Pahalgam is a river-side hill town about 95 km from Srinagar, used as a base for Aru and Betaab valleys, rafting and pony rides, and treks towards Kolahoi Glacier and the Tarsar-Marsar lakes. It suits families and couples who want easy scenery, and trekkers who want a starting point. In 2026 two well-known spots, Baisaran and Chandanwari, are closed by a district order, so plan around the valleys that are open.

When
What to expect
April to June
The main season. Meadows are green with snow still on the peaks; days are roughly 7 to 24 C. Good for rafting. Weekends get crowded.
July to August
Amarnath Yatra period (3 July to 28 August in 2026). The town fills with pilgrims, rooms should be booked 3 to 4 weeks ahead, and one source says non-pilgrims must leave the yatra route by 3 pm.
September to October
Fewer visitors, clear skies and autumn colour; roughly 4 to 23 C. Often called the best-value time.
December to February
Cold, about -5 to 5 C, with heavy snowfall. Upper routes can close and side valleys may be hard to reach.
Sights and activities
1
Betaab Valley
A green meadow beside the river, ringed by pine forest and snow peaks, named after a Hindi film shot here. It has walking paths, wooden bridges and pony rides.
Distance
Sources differ: about 7 to 15 km from town, a 20 to 30 minute drive
Entry
100 for adults, 50 for children aged 6 to 12 (cash at the gate)
A village and meadow inside the Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary. A 30 to 45 minute uphill walk from the village leads to the wider upper meadow with a view of Kolahoi Peak.
Distance
About 12 km from town, 25 to 35 minutes by union taxi
Entry
Reported as free or about 20 to 30 per person; a vehicle or parking fee may apply
The river runs through the town and can be reached on foot. Rafting trips of 2.5 km, 5 km and 8 km are sold, costing about 500 to 1,500 per person. Keep out of fast-flowing sections.
The starting point of the Amarnath Yatra at about 2,895 m, known for a snow bridge from mid-May to late June. Closed to tourists until 31 December 2026 under a district order of 7 July 2026.
Distance
About 16 km from town, 35 to 45 minutes by union taxi
A pine-ringed meadow above the town, normally reached on foot or by pony. Closed to visitors until 31 December 2026 as a security precaution after the April 2025 incident.
From Srinagar the road runs via Awantipora and Anantnag, about 95 km in 2.5 to 3 hours. Shared taxis and minibuses leave from the Tourist Reception Centre in Srinagar. State and private buses also link Pahalgam with Jammu and Srinagar.
By train
The district website lists Udhampur (217 km) and Jammu (285 km) as the nearest stations. Trains from Delhi, including a Vande Bharat taking about 8 hours 20 minutes, run to Katra; from Jammu or Katra the journey continues by road to Srinagar.
By air
Srinagar International Airport, about 90 to 96 km away, 2.5 to 3 hours by road.
Where to base yourself
Stay in or near Pahalgam town along the Lidder river, close to the taxi union stand, since all valley trips start there.
Getting around
Only Pahalgam taxi union vehicles may run to Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari; a taxi hired in Srinagar can drop you in town but cannot do local sightseeing.
Union taxi from the stand to Betaab Valley costs about 1,000 to 1,600, to Aru about 1,100 to 1,800 and to Chandanwari about 1,300 to 2,000, depending on the vehicle.
A combined trip to more than one valley costs about 1,700 to 3,000; the standard halt is about one hour per stop, with extra waiting charged at about 400 an hour.
Pony rides are sold by route, from about 600 for a short river-point ride to about 3,000 for long routes; agree the full price before starting.
The town centre and riverside can be covered on foot.
On the way
Worth a stop on the drive from Srinagar, the last stretch whether you arrive by train, bus or air. Stopping needs a taxi or your own vehicle; buses do not wait. Distances are by road.
1
Pampore
Kashmir's saffron town. The fields flower from late October into November; roadside shops sell saffron, dry fruit and kahwa.
Dhabas in the market serve simple thalis of dal, vegetables, roti and rice for about 100 to 150. Hotel restaurants serve Kashmiri and north Indian food; a fine-dining meal costs about 1,500 to 1,800 per person.
Try these
Wazwan (Kashmiri multi-course meat feast)
Grilled trout (river fish from local streams)
Kahwa (green tea with saffron)
Noon chai (salted pink tea)
Vegetarian thalis are easy to find at dhabas, helped by the pilgrim traffic.

Permits and documents
No permit was found to be needed for Indian visitors to Pahalgam town, Aru or Betaab. Carry photo ID, as police checkpoints are common. Baisaran and Chandanwari are closed by district order until 31 December 2026. The Amarnath Yatra needs its own registration.
Safety
By day
Checkpoints and a visible police presence are normal, and a Tourist Police wing works in the area. Follow closure orders; do not try to reach Baisaran or Chandanwari while they are shut.
At night
The town is quiet after day visitors leave. Stay within the town and hotel area after dark.
Solo women
Use union taxis, stay in town hotels and fix pony and taxi prices before starting.
Roads
The Khanabal to Pahalgam road near Bumzoo (Mattan) has loose hillside; do not stop under the slopes, especially after rain. The Ramban to Banihal stretch of the Jammu to Srinagar highway needs careful driving. Snow can close upper routes in winter.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)
Practical
Mobile network
Prepaid SIM cards from other states do not work in Kashmir; bring a postpaid connection. Coverage is fine in town and patchy in the valleys; in Aru only BSNL is reported to work.
ATMs and cash
J&K Bank runs ATMs in the area, including at the Nunwan and Chandanwari yatra base camps. Betaab Valley tickets are cash only, so carry cash.
Fuel
Fill up in Srinagar or Anantnag before driving up.
Medical
A small civil hospital in town handles basic care. A sub-district hospital for Pahalgam has been reported as long delayed, so for anything serious go to Anantnag, the district headquarters about 45 km away.
The town, riverside and Betaab Valley are reached by road and need little walking. Altitude is moderate at about 2,130 m; carry warm layers in every season.
Children
Betaab Valley, the riverside and short pony rides suit children. Keep them away from the fast river edge.
Wheelchair users
No step-free information was found. Meadows and valley paths are uneven. Expect to see most places from the vehicle or the roadside.
Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.
Culture and responsible travel
Mamaleshwar Temple is an active shrine; dress modestly and remove shoes.
Pahalgam is the base for the Amarnath Yatra; give way to pilgrims and expect restrictions in July and August.
Aru lies inside a wildlife sanctuary; carry your litter back and stay on paths.
Agree taxi, pony and guide prices in full before starting, including waiting time and the number of stops.
Cooperate with security checks and respect closure orders.
What to pack
Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
A warm layer for the evenings, which are cool even in summer
Walking shoes with a good grip, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle
Clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and socks for hot stone floors where shoes come off. Some temples do not allow phones or bags, so carry little
Enough cash for the whole stay, a power bank and offline maps
Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
