FamousHill-stationHeritageSnowPilgrimage
Shimla is the state capital of Himachal Pradesh and an old hill station with British-era buildings, a traffic-free Mall Road and wooded hills around it. It suits families, couples and first-time hill travellers who want easy walks, short day trips and a ride on the Kalka-Shimla heritage train. Winter visitors come for the chance of snow.

2.5 km from the Ridge on foot, 6 km by Circular Road
Entry
Temple free; ropeway about 250 rupees for adults
Timings

Viceregal Lodge (Indian Institute of Advanced Study)
A six-storey Scottish Baronial style building finished in 1888 on Observatory Hill. It was the summer seat of the Viceroy and now houses a research institute.
Mashobra is a quiet wooded village with upmarket resorts. Naldehra, further along the same road at about 2,200 m, has a nine-hole golf course in a cedar forest.
Ordinary and luxury buses run from Delhi (about 350 to 370 km, 8 to 10 hours) and from Chandigarh (about 120 km, about 3.5 to 4 hours, with buses roughly every half hour). Most buses end at the government bus stand in Shimla.
By train
Shimla has its own station on the narrow-gauge Kalka-Shimla heritage railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line of about 96 km with more than 100 tunnels. Regular trains from Delhi run to Kalka, where you change to the hill train; it takes about 5 to 6 hours, with 3 to 4 trains a day.
By air
Shimla Airport at Jubbarhatti is 23 km from the city but works on a limited basis depending on season and weather. Chandigarh airport, about 120 km away, is the dependable choice.
Where to base yourself
Stay near Mall Road or Circular Road, where most budget and mid-range hotels are and the main sights are within walking distance.
Getting around
Walking is the main way around the centre, as the Ridge and Mall Road are for pedestrians.
A public lift links the road below with Mall Road for about 10 rupees per person, from about 8 am to 9 pm.
The Jakhoo ropeway carries visitors up to the temple for about 250 rupees per adult.
Taxis can be hired for day trips to Kufri, Mashobra and Naldehra.
