Ranikhet is a calm, green hill town run by a cantonment board, with views towards Nanda Devi and Trishul, an old fruit orchard, a hilltop golf course and a few well-loved temples. It suits families, couples and older travellers who want easy walks and short drives rather than crowds or hard treks.

Chaubatia Gardens
A government fruit research orchard spread over about 600 acres at around 1,800 m, with apple, peach, plum and apricot trees and views of the Himalaya. Fruit, juice and honey are sold on site.
An old temple to Goddess Durga, said to date from the 8th century, on the road to Chaubatia. Its walls are covered with thousands of bells tied by pilgrims whose wishes were granted.
An army museum opened in the 1970s showing the history of the Kumaon Regiment, with war memorabilia, documents and a silver sceptre linked to the Rani of Jhansi.
Direct buses run from Delhi (Anand Vihar and Kashmiri Gate) to Ranikhet, about 350 km. There are also frequent buses from Haldwani, and road links to Kathgodam, Nainital and Almora.
By train
Kathgodam is the nearest railway station, about 75 to 90 km away by road. The overnight Ranikhet Express runs from Old Delhi to Kathgodam.
By air
Pantnagar Airport is the nearest, about 110 km away, with flights from Delhi.
Where to base yourself
Stay in or near Ranikhet town, close to the bus stand and the market, as most sights are 1 to 11 km from there.
Getting around
The town centre and market are small enough to cover on foot.
Taxis and shared jeeps are used for sights outside town such as Chaubatia, the golf course and Majkhali.
KMOU buses link Ranikhet with Haldwani, about 86 km away, from about 225 rupees per person.
A private taxi between Kathgodam and Ranikhet costs about 2,700 to 3,500 rupees for a small car and takes about 3 hours.
On the way
Worth a stop on the drive from Kathgodam, the last stretch whether you arrive by train, bus or air. Stopping needs a taxi or your own vehicle; buses do not wait. Distances are by road.
