Rahagir
Trishul peak seen from Kausani

Destinations / Uttarakhand

Kausani

A quiet Kumaon hill town known for a wide view of snow peaks, tea gardens and Gandhi's ashram.

FamousHill-stationHeritageTrekPilgrimage

People come to Kausani for the long line of Himalayan snow peaks seen from the ridge, best at sunrise, and for the view down into the Katyur valley. It suits travellers who want a slow, quiet break with short walks, a tea garden, old temples at Baijnath and the ashram where Mahatma Gandhi stayed in 1929. There is little nightlife or shopping, so it is better for couples, families and older travellers than for those wanting activity.

Getting there

By bus
Kausani is reached by road through Almora or Ranikhet. Delhi is about 410 km away. Buses run from Delhi to Almora, 51 km short of Kausani, and from Haldwani to Almora; taxis cover the rest. Tour operators also run organised trips with transport included from Delhi and Kathgodam; see Guided trips and packages below.
By train
Kathgodam is the nearest railway station, about 135 to 145 km away, 4.5 to 5 hours by road.
By air
Pantnagar is the nearest airport, about 177 km away. Dehradun (Jolly Grant) is a more distant option.
Where to base yourself
Stay in Kausani town on the ridge near the bus stand and Anasakti Ashram, where most hotels face the peaks.

Getting around

  • The town is small and the ashram, museum and viewpoints can be covered on foot.
  • Taxis and shared vehicles go to the tea estate, Baijnath and the Rudradhari trailhead; one guide puts the daily spend at about 200 to 400 per person on a budget and 400 to 800 mid-range.
  • Local public transport is thin, so many visitors keep a hired taxi for day trips.

On the way

Worth a stop on the drive from Kathgodam, the last stretch whether you arrive by train, bus or air. Stopping needs a taxi or your own vehicle; buses do not wait. Distances are by road.

Guided trips and packages

Private operators sell road packages to Kausani with a car or tempo traveller included, mostly starting from Delhi and a few from Kathgodam railhead, usually combined with Nainital, Binsar or Munsiyari and lasting 4 to 8 days. No fixed departure dates or season were shown on the pages checked; these are private-vehicle packages rather than scheduled group departures. Listed prices ran from about Rs 15,000 to Rs 22,500 per person, and several operators quote only on enquiry. No government-run tour to Kausani was found: the KMVN packages list checked on 2026-10-04 had no Kausani itinerary.

Food

Most meals are eaten in hotel restaurants, which serve North Indian, Chinese and some Kumaoni dishes. There are a few small restaurants and roadside dhabas in town. A cup of tea costs about 20 to 30.

Try these

  • Aloo ke gutke (spiced potatoes)
  • Bhatt ki churkani (black soybean curry)
  • Madua ki roti (finger millet flatbread)
  • Kafuli (curry of green leafy vegetables)
  • Gahat dal (horse gram lentils)

Vegetarian food is the norm and easy to find. The ashram serves only vegetarian meals.

Permits and documents

No permit requirement was found for Indian visitors to Kausani or its sights. Carry a photo ID for hotel check-in.

Safety

By day
A quiet small town. The walk to Rudradhari Falls crosses wet, uneven ground, so wear proper shoes and consider a local guide.
At night
The town goes quiet early and winter nights drop to around freezing. Carry warm clothes and a torch.
Solo women
No specific warnings were found online. Normal care applies; avoid forest trails alone after dark.
Roads
Hill roads all the way from Kathgodam. Landslides are frequent in the monsoon, from July to September, and snow can affect roads from late December to February.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)

Practical

Mobile network
Jio, Airtel and BSNL work in town for calls and messaging; BSNL is the most reliable in remote spots. Data speeds are slow.
ATMs and cash
There are ATMs in town but they can run out of cash in peak season. Almora, 51 km away, has more.
Fuel
Fill up at Almora or before leaving the plains.
Medical
For Kausani. The district headquarters, Bageshwar, is about 40 km away and Almora is 51 km away.

Coverage maps: Jio · Airtel · Vi · BSNL. Report a problem

Accessibility

Seniors
Suits older travellers: the main draw is the view, which can be enjoyed from hotels and the ashram. The road journey is long and winding.
Children
Fine for children; the tea estate and the observatory are easy outings. The 4.5 to 5 hour hill drive can cause motion sickness.
Wheelchair users
The town is on a sloping ridge and the falls and Pinnath are reached only on foot trails.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Anasakti Ashram is a working ashram with evening prayers. Keep quiet, dress modestly and note that plastic bags are not allowed there.
  • Lakshmi Ashram is a working training centre for local women, not a tourist site. Visit only in the hours allowed and ask before taking photographs.
  • Baijnath is an active Shiva temple complex. Remove shoes where asked.
  • Carry your litter back from the Rudradhari and Pinnath trails.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Proper winter wear: a heavy jacket, thermals, gloves and a cap
  • Walking shoes with a good grip, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and socks for hot stone floors where shoes come off. Some temples do not allow phones or bags, so carry little
  • Some cash in small notes for autos, stalls and tips
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
