Panchachuli peaks near Munsiyari

Destinations / Uttarakhand

Munsiyari

A remote Kumaon hill town in the Johar Valley facing the five Panchachuli peaks.

Lesser-knownTrekSnowVillageWaterfall

Munsiyari sits at about 2,298 metres and looks straight at the Panchachuli peaks, with Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot also in view. It suits walkers and people who want a quiet mountain town, with short treks to Khaliya Top and forest ponds and longer routes to the Milam, Ralam and Namik glaciers. It is a long road journey, so it is for travellers with time rather than a quick weekend.

Getting there

By bus
Munsiyari is about 135 km from Pithoragarh and about 600 km from Delhi. From Delhi the road goes via Haldwani and Almora, or via Nainital, Kausani and Bageshwar. Buses from Delhi run to Haldwani, Almora and Tanakpur; change there for a bus or taxi, and plan a night halt on the way. Tour operators also run organised trips with transport included from Delhi and Kathgodam; see Guided trips and packages below.
By train
Nearest railway stations are Kathgodam, about 275 km away, and Tanakpur, about 286 km away. Taxis and buses run onward from both.
By air
Pantnagar Airport is about 249 km away and has flights to Delhi. Naini Saini Airport at Pithoragarh is nearer but has limited flights. A helicopter service from Haldwani to Munsiyari started in February 2024 under the UDAN scheme.
Where to base yourself
Stay in Munsiyari town itself, where the guesthouses, homestays and the KMVN tourist rest house are.

Getting around

  • Taxis are available in Munsiyari town for sightseeing; Agree the price before starting.

  • Kulka (a local preparation of flour and potato)

Vegetarian North Indian food is the norm at dhabas and hotels.

Permits and documents

No permit was found to be needed for Munsiyari town. Khaliya Top has a 50 rupee entry fee at the gate. Check with the local administration before going. Carry photo ID.

Safety

By day
A quiet small town. The main risks are on treks: cold, altitude up to about 3,500 metres at Khaliya Top and few facilities on the trails.
At night
Very little is open after dark and it gets very cold, below freezing in winter. Finish treks and road travel in daylight.
Solo women
The town is small and remote, so stay in a known guesthouse and trek with a guide or a group.
Roads
A long mountain road, about 10 hours from Kathgodam. Landslides are a risk in the monsoon from July to September, and travel sites advise avoiding that season.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)

Practical

Mobile network
Expect patchy coverage in a remote town.
ATMs and cash
Only a couple of ATMs, and they often run out of cash. Carry enough cash from Haldwani or Almora.
Fuel
There is a single petrol pump and it can run out of fuel. Fill up before the final stretch.
Medical
Munsiyari has a government Community Health Centre (CHC Munsyari) for first aid and basic care. Serious cases go to Pithoragarh, about 125 km away. Carry your own medicines.

Accessibility

Seniors
The long road journey and cold are tiring. Break the trip with a night halt, and keep to the town and roadside viewpoints rather than the treks.
Children
Fine for children used to long drives. Darkot, Birthi Falls and the short walks suit them; Khaliya Top is a full-day climb.
Wheelchair users
Poor.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Darkot weavers sell hand-woven Pashmina shawls; buying directly supports the village.
  • Temples such as Nanda Devi and the Kali temple at Kalamuni are active places of worship; dress modestly and remove shoes.
  • Carry your litter back from Khaliya Top and the forest ponds, as there are almost no facilities on the trails.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Proper winter wear: a heavy jacket, thermals, gloves and a cap
  • Waterproof shoes with grip if you go in the snow months
  • Walking shoes with a good grip, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle
  • Enough cash for the whole stay, a power bank and offline maps
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
