A heritage village on the old Hindustan-Tibet Road, facing the Kinner Kailash peaks.
Lesser-knownVillageOrchardHeritageTrek
Kalpa sits high above the Sutlej gorge with a direct view of the Kinner Kailash range, and sunrise on the peaks is the main reason people come. The old village has carved wood-and-stone temples, a small monastery and apple orchards, all reachable on foot. It suits travellers who want quiet walks and mountain views rather than a busy hill town.

When
What to expect
April to June
The main season. Days are about 15 to 22 C and nights about 6 to 10 C, with clear skies and open roads.
July to mid September
Monsoon. The orchards are green, but landslides can close the Rampur to Reckong Peo highway, mostly in July and August.
Late September to November
Apple harvest and sharp mountain views in late September and October. By November nights fall to about 0 to 5 C and it turns dull and cold.
December to March
Snow and sub-zero nights, with very few visitors. Heavy snow can close roads, and the cliff road to Roghi is shut.

Daytime, April to October; the road closes in winter snow
Road is the main way in, along NH 5 through Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur and Tapri to Reckong Peo, then about 7 km uphill to Kalpa. HRTC runs buses from Delhi, Chandigarh and Shimla to Reckong Peo, and FlixBus runs AC coaches from Delhi and Chandigarh. Tour operators also run organised trips with transport included from Delhi and Chandigarh; see Guided trips and packages below.
By train
There is no railway in Kinnaur. Shimla station is about 244 to 260 km away; Kalka, about 309 km away, has better links to the rest of India.
By air
Shimla airport is the nearest, about 267 to 275 km away. Chandigarh airport, about 335 km away, has far more flights.
Where to base yourself
Stay in Kalpa village itself, where most guesthouses and hotels face the Kinner Kailash range; Reckong Peo, about 7 km below, has the bus stand, ATMs and fuel.
Getting around
Local buses run between Reckong Peo and Kalpa about every hour; the fare was about 15 rupees and the ride takes 20 to 25 minutes.
Kalpa village, the temples and the monastery are all covered on foot, though the lanes are steep.
A taxi from Kalpa to Suicide Point costs a few hundred rupees; use a local driver, as the Roghi road is narrow with steep drops.
Roghi can also be reached on a flat orchard footpath in about 45 minutes.
On the way
Worth a stop on the drive from Shimla, the last stretch whether you arrive by train, bus or air. Stopping needs a taxi or your own vehicle; buses do not wait. Distances are by road.

Narkanda
Apple-growing ridge at about 2,700 m with wide Himalayan views. Hatu Peak and the Hatu Mata temple are 7 to 8 km up a side road. Skiing in winter.
Organised road trips to Kalpa do run, usually as part of a Kinnaur circuit that also covers Sarahan, Sangla or Chitkul. Prices found ranged from about Rs 10,500 to Rs 14,500 per person.

Permits and documents
Indian travellers need no permit for Kalpa. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit only beyond Jangi, towards Spiti, not for Kalpa. Carry a valid photo ID. Drones may not be flown without authorisation, as this is a sensitive border district.
Safety
By day
The village walks are easy. Stay well back from unfenced edges at Suicide Point, especially when taking photos.
At night
Avoid the Roghi cliff road after dark or in rain. Nights are cold in every season, so carry a warm jacket.
Roads
The road from Shimla is mostly good tarmac, but landslides can close the Rampur to Reckong Peo stretch in July and August and heavy snow can close roads in winter. The climb from Reckong Peo is steep with tight hairpin bends.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)
Practical
Mobile network
BSNL is the most reliable. Jio works but is patchy and Airtel is unreliable. UPI payments can fail, so download offline maps and carry cash.
ATMs and cash
None in Kalpa. The nearest ATMs and banks are in Reckong Peo, about 7 km away, and they can run out of cash.
Fuel
No petrol pump in Kalpa. The nearest are in Reckong Peo and at Powari, so fill up before the climb.
Medical
Kalpa has only a dispensary. The nearest hospital and proper pharmacies are in Reckong Peo, about 7 km away.
The mountain view needs no walking, but the village lanes are steep. Mild headache or tiredness is common on the first evening at this height. The road journey is long, so break it at Shimla, Narkanda or Rampur.
Children
The village walks suit children. Keep them close at Suicide Point and on the Roghi road, and carry warm clothes.
Wheelchair users
Difficult.
Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.
Culture and responsible travel
Ask before photographing people, temples and the monastery.
A small donation at the temples and the monastery is appreciated.
Do not pick apples in the orchards without the owner's permission.
Do not fly a drone without authorisation; Kinnaur is a sensitive border district.
What to pack
Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
Printed copies of your permit, with a few passport-size photos
A warm layer for the evenings, which are cool even in summer
Walking shoes with a good grip, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle
Enough cash for the whole stay, a power bank and offline maps
Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
