Permits and documents
No permits are needed for the main sights. Book Bhadra jeep safaris in advance.
Safety
By day
Generally relaxed. Wear good shoes on the rocky Mullayanagiri and Baba Budangiri trails, and dress in layers as mist and wind change quickly.
At night
Plan to be back from the hilltops before the 6 pm closing time.
Solo women
No specific advice was found online; usual precautions apply, and estate stays and hired drivers make solo travel easier.
Roads
Hill roads to the peaks and to Kemmangundi pass through plantations and forest; heavy monsoon rain and fog can slow travel. Hebbe Falls needs a 4x4 jeep or a walk.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)
Practical
Mobile network
All the main networks (Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL) work in town. Expect weaker signal on the hilltops and in the forest areas.
ATMs and cash
ATMs are easy to find in town. Withdraw cash in Chikkamagaluru town, the district headquarters, before heading to the hills.
Fuel
There are several petrol pumps in and around town. Fill up in town before the hill circuits.
Medical
Hospitals are easy to find across the city. In an emergency dial 112, or 108 for an ambulance in most states. The main hospitals are in Chikkamagaluru town.
The town, Coffee Museum, Hirekolale Lake and estate stays are easy. The final stone steps at Mullayanagiri and the walks to Z Point and Hebbe Falls are tiring.
Children
Families can enjoy Ratnagiri Bore Gandhi Park with its toy train and musical fountain, lake visits and safaris; supervise children near waterfalls and viewpoints.
Wheelchair users
Most peaks, viewpoints and waterfalls involve steps or rough trails.
Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.
Culture and responsible travel
Baba Budangiri is sacred to both Hindus and Muslims; dress modestly and do not photograph inside the shrine.
Coffee estates are private farms; visit only with permission or on a guided estate walk.
Respect forest rules in Bhadra Tiger Reserve: stay in the safari vehicle and keep noise down.
Carry your litter back down from the peaks and waterfalls.
What to pack
Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
Walking shoes with a good grip, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle
Clothes in earthy colours, a cap and binoculars for safaris
Some cash in small notes for autos, stalls and tips
Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
