By air

Where to base yourself
Stay along Beach Road near RK Beach, which keeps the museums and the main beach within walking or short auto distance.

Safety

At night
Beach Road stays lively into the evening. Use app cabs late at night.
Solo women
Stick to busy areas after dark and use app cabs with trip sharing.
Roads
City roads are good. The road to Borra Caves climbs through hills, so avoid driving it after dark.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)

Practical

Mobile network
All the main networks (Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL) work in town. A large city.
ATMs and cash
ATMs are widely available across the city.
Fuel
Fuel stations are common in the city; fill up before heading into the hills.
Medical
Large city hospitals are available in Visakhapatnam.

Accessibility

Seniors
Beaches, museums and Kailasagiri (by ropeway or road) are manageable. Borra Caves involve steps and uneven floors.
Children
The zoo, submarine museum, Kailasagiri toy train and beaches suit children well.
Wheelchair users
Beach Road promenade is flat. The submarine interior and Borra Caves are not wheelchair friendly.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Dress modestly and remove footwear at Simhachalam Temple.
  • Swim only where others are swimming and lifeguards are present; the sea can be rough.
  • Do not leave plastic on the beaches or inside the caves.
  • Photography inside the submarine and caves needs a camera ticket.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Sunscreen, a hat, swimwear and sandals
  • Some cash in small notes for autos, stalls and tips
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
