Getting there

By bus
The road runs Guwahati or Tezpur - Bhalukpong - Bomdila - Dirang - Sela Pass - Jang - Tawang. It takes 14-16 hours of driving, best split with a night in Bomdila or Dirang. APSTS buses and shared Sumos run from Tezpur and Guwahati, leaving early in the morning.
By train
Tawang has no railway. The nearest stations are Rangapara North (about 340 km) and Tezpur (about 330 km); Guwahati (about 450-480 km) has the best train links to the rest of India.
By air
Tawang has no airport. Tezpur (Salonibari) airport is about 320-330 km away with limited flights; Guwahati airport is about 480 km away and is the main gateway. Weather-dependent helicopter flights run on set days from Guwahati to the Tawang helipad (about 1 hour).
Where to base yourself
Stay in Tawang town, which has hotels, guesthouses and homestays and is about 2 km from the monastery.

Getting around

  • Hired SUVs with a driver are the usual way to see Tawang and nearby lakes; tour operators quote about 4,500 to 6,000 rupees a day including fuel and driver.
  • Self-drive SUV rentals cost about 2,000 to 3,000 rupees a day plus fuel.
  • Bum La and Sangestar Lake trips need a permitted local vehicle arranged with the border permit.
  • Sights in town, such as the monastery and war memorial, can be reached on foot or by short taxi rides.

On the way

Worth a stop on the drive from Tezpur, the last stretch whether you arrive by train, bus or air. Stopping needs a taxi or your own vehicle; buses do not wait. Distances are by road.

Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. Bum La and Sangestar Lake need extra permits from the DC office in Tawang and Army clearance.

Safety

By day
Generally calm town; the main risks are altitude, cold and road conditions.
At night
Very cold after dark; plan to be off the mountain roads before nightfall.
Solo women
No specific safety concerns were found in sources; usual precautions and using registered taxis are sensible.
Roads
Long mountain road over Sela Pass with landslides in the monsoon and snow and ice in winter; split the trip with a night at Bomdila or Dirang to adjust to altitude.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)

Practical

Mobile network
Jio and BSNL give the best, though patchy, coverage; Airtel is limited. Signal is weak beyond Bomdila.
ATMs and cash
Tawang has only a few ATMs and many businesses do not take digital payments, so carry enough cash in small notes.
Fuel
Fill up in Tezpur, Bomdila or Dirang before the pass.
Medical
Khan Drowa Zangmo District Hospital is in Tawang town. Serious cases are referred down to Tezpur or Guwahati. Carry altitude-sickness advice from your doctor.

Accessibility

Seniors
Possible with care, but the long road journey and altitude of about 3,000 m (and about 4,600 m at Bum La) are demanding.
Children
Fine for older children dressed for cold; watch for altitude symptoms on the passes.
Wheelchair users
Difficult: steep hilly streets, monastery steps and rough roads.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Tawang is home to the Buddhist Monpa people; dress modestly and behave quietly at monasteries and during prayers.
  • Ask before photographing monks, nuns or ceremonies.
  • Losar (New Year, February or March) and Torgya at the monastery are the main festivals.
  • Respect photography and movement rules near Army areas and on the border roads.
  • Local crafts such as thangka paintings, carpets and wooden bowls are sold at the craft centre.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Printed copies of your permit, with a few passport-size photos
  • Thermals, a down or fleece jacket, gloves and a warm cap, even in summer
  • Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm: the sun is harsh at altitude
  • Ask your doctor before you go about altitude sickness and what to carry for it
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and socks for hot stone floors where shoes come off. Some temples do not allow phones or bags, so carry little
  • Enough cash for the whole stay, a power bank and offline maps
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
