A car-free hill station above Neral, reached on foot, on horseback or by the narrow-gauge toy train.
FamousHill-stationTrekHeritage
Matheran is the only hill station in India where motor vehicles are banned outright. You leave the car at Dasturi Naka and walk, ride a horse, or take the narrow-gauge train that has climbed from Neral since 1907. The red laterite paths run between forest and about thirty-odd viewpoints looking out over the Western Ghats, and the absence of engines makes it quieter than anywhere else this close to Mumbai.

Best time to go
When
What to expect
October to March
Clear and cool, the main season. Weekends are busy with visitors from Mumbai and Pune.
June to September
The monsoon is green and dramatic, with mist and waterfalls. The toy train usually suspends service in the heaviest months, and the paths turn slippery red mud.
April and May
Warm but still cooler than the plains. The forest is dry and the views hazier.
Sights and activities
1
Panorama Point
The best known viewpoint, at the northern end, looking out over the plains and the Neral valley. The usual place to watch sunrise.
The 21 km narrow-gauge line from Neral, opened in 1907, climbing through forest and switchbacks. A shuttle also runs the short section between Aman Lodge and Matheran when the full service is suspended.
Distance
Matheran station is in the bazaar.
Entry
The ordinary and first-class fares differ and the shuttle is priced separately
Timings
Service varies by season and is usually suspended in the heaviest monsoon weeks
The town's single commercial street: chikki shops, leather sandals, horse stands and the old post office. Hand-pulled rickshaws and horses are the only traffic.
There is no bus into Matheran. Buses and taxis reach Neral or Dasturi Naka only; from Dasturi the last 2.5 km to the bazaar is on foot, by horse or by hand-pulled rickshaw.
By train
Neral Junction, in the foothills, is the railhead, on the Mumbai to Pune line with local and express trains from Mumbai CSMT in about 1 hour 25 minutes. From Neral the narrow-gauge toy train climbs to Matheran; when it is not running, a shared taxi covers the 9 km to Dasturi Naka.
By air
Mumbai airport is about 100 km away, roughly 3 hours by road to Neral.
Where to base yourself
Hotels are spread along the main bazaar road and out towards Charlotte Lake. Everything is reached on foot from there.
Getting around
No motor vehicles are allowed beyond Dasturi Naka, except municipal ambulances and e-rickshaws.
Walking is the normal way to get about; the viewpoints are 1 to 4 km from the bazaar on red earth paths.
Horses and hand-pulled rickshaws wait at Dasturi Naka and in the bazaar; agree the rate first.
Luggage is carried up by porters or on horseback for a fee.

Permits and documents
No permit is needed, but the municipality charges an entry fee at Dasturi Naka, and vehicles are stopped there. Carry photo ID for hotel check-in.
Safety
By day
Paths run close to unfenced cliff edges at several viewpoints; stay back from the lip, particularly in mist. Monkeys snatch food and bags near Charlotte Lake and Echo Point.
At night
Paths are unlit and the forest is dark. Carry a torch and do not walk to the viewpoints after sunset.
Solo women
No specific safety information was found. The town is small and busy in season; usual care applies on the quieter forest paths.
Roads
The Neral to Dasturi road is a narrow ghat with sharp bends, and is slippery in the monsoon. Shared taxi drivers take it fast.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies), 108 (ambulance)
Practical
Mobile network
All the main networks (Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL) work in town. Coverage is reported as reasonable in the bazaar and patchy at the viewpoints.
ATMs and cash
At least one ATM or bank within about 6 km of the centre (AXIS BANK ATM), the nearest under 1 km away. Carry some cash as a back-up. There are few machines and they run out at weekends. Carry cash from Neral.
Fuel
No fuel in Matheran, since there are no vehicles. The last pumps are at Neral.
Medical
A small municipal facility and private clinics in town; anything serious means going down to Neral or Karjat.
