Safety

By day
Generally relaxed. Beaches can be windy, so take care during water sports and swim in marked areas, such as the lifeguarded zone at Ghoghla.
At night
Keep belongings secure and avoid isolated areas and empty beaches after dark.
Solo women
Diu is a small, tourist-friendly town, but the usual care applies: keep to busy areas after dark and use known taxis or autos.
Roads
Roads on the island are short and easy. The long drives to Ahmedabad or Mumbai are on national highways.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)

Practical

Mobile network
All the main networks (Jio, Airtel, Vi and BSNL) work in town.
ATMs and cash
At least a few ATMs and banks within about 6 km of the centre (Dena Bank, ICICI Bank), the nearest under 1 km away. Carry some cash as a back-up. Carry some cash for autos and small shops.
Fuel
There are several petrol pumps in and around town.
Medical
There are several hospitals within about 6 km, including Government Hospital, Diu. In an emergency dial 112, or 108 for an ambulance in most states. Serious cases may need transfer to a larger mainland town.

Accessibility

Seniors
Most sights are close together, but the fort has steep steps and uneven paths.
Children
Good for children, with calm beaches and a children's park at Ghoghla Beach.
Wheelchair users
Hard at the fort and caves because of steps and rough ground. Beach promenades are easier.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Dress modestly when visiting churches and temples.
  • Diu has Portuguese heritage alongside Gujarati culture; respect worshippers at St. Paul's Church and Gangeshwar Temple.
  • Do not leave litter on the beaches; Ghoghla Beach is a candidate for Blue Flag certification.
  • A few words of Gujarati are appreciated by locals.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Sunscreen, a hat, swimwear and sandals
  • Some cash in small notes for autos, stalls and tips
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
