Safety

By day
The sights are forest and mountain walks. Go with a local guide on the longer treks, as trail details are not well documented.
At night
It is a remote village with few facilities. Do not walk forest trails after dark.
Solo women
No specific reports were found online. Book a known homestay and arrange treks through your host.
Roads
The last stretch from Aut is a hill road. Snow falls in December and January, so check road conditions before travelling in winter.

At least one ATM or bank within about 6 km of the centre (Punjab National Bank), the nearest about 3 km away. Carry some cash as a back-up. Carry enough cash from the highway towns.
Fuel
There are several petrol pumps in and around town. Fill up on the main highway before turning off at Aut.

Accessibility

Seniors
The village stay is possible, but nearly all sights need walking on mountain trails.
Children
Suitable for children who can manage short hill walks; the peak treks are long.
Wheelchair users
Not suitable. Sights are on foot trails and stays are simple village houses.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Temples here are active village shrines. Dress modestly and ask before entering or taking photographs.
  • Locals are farmers and shepherds; do not pick fruit in the orchards and ask before walking through them.
  • Stays are simple by design. Carry your rubbish back out of the valley.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Thermals, a down or fleece jacket, gloves and a warm cap, even in summer
  • Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and lip balm: the sun is harsh at altitude
  • Ask your doctor before you go about altitude sickness and what to carry for it
  • Walking shoes with a good grip, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle
  • A rain jacket or umbrella and quick-dry clothes
  • Enough cash for the whole stay, a power bank and offline maps
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
