FamousHill-stationLakePilgrimageHeritage

Mount Abu is a cool, green hill town in a desert state, about 10 to 12 degrees cooler than Jaipur. People come for the carved marble Dilwara Jain temples, boating on Nakki Lake, and the view from Guru Shikhar, the highest peak of the Aravallis. It suits families, couples, pilgrims and anyone wanting an easy two or three day break from Gujarat or Rajasthan.

Best time to go

WhenWhat to expect
October to MarchThe best time. Days are about 15 to 25 C and winter nights can fall to 10 C or lower. December and January are busy and hotel rates rise by about 30 to 50 percent.
April to JuneWarm, about 23 to 33 C, but still much cooler than the plains. May and June are a peak holiday period and the Summer Festival is held in May around Buddha Purnima.
July to SeptemberMonsoon. The hills turn green and misty and there are fewer visitors, but heavy rain is possible and the hill road needs care.

Try these

  • Rajasthani thali (a full plate of local dishes)
  • Gujarati thali (a milder, slightly sweet full plate)
  • Sev tamatar sabzi (tomato curry topped with fried gram noodles)
  • Poha and jalebi (flattened rice with a syrupy sweet, eaten for breakfast)

  • Ghevar and mohanthal (local sweets)

Very easy. Mount Abu is a major Jain pilgrimage town and most restaurants are pure vegetarian. Non-vegetarian choices are limited.

Safety

By day
No specific daytime risks were reported by the sources. Agree taxi fares in advance to avoid overcharging, and carry water for the hilltop sights.
At night
Sources advise against driving the hill road after dark in the monsoon.
Roads
The 28 km climb from Abu Road has sharp hairpin bends and needs careful driving. Avoid it at night during the monsoon (July to September). The highway from Jaipur is a smooth four-lane road with fuel stations every 60 to 80 km.

Accessibility

Seniors
The town and lake are easy, but Guru Shikhar needs a climb of about 300 steps and Adhar Devi temple 365 steps. Winter evenings are cold.
Children
Suits families: boating on Nakki Lake, short walks and horse rides at Sunset Point. The winding hill road can cause travel sickness.
Wheelchair users
Several main sights involve long flights of steps.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • The Dilwara temples are active places of worship: keep quiet, cover shoulders and legs, and do not take photographs inside.
  • General visitors are admitted to Dilwara only from noon; the morning is kept for Jain worshippers.
  • In the wildlife sanctuary do not feed animals and do not carry plastic.
  • The Summer Festival in May and the Winter Festival at the end of December bring folk performances, boat races and lamp ceremonies at Nakki Lake.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and socks for hot stone floors where shoes come off. Some temples do not allow phones or bags, so carry little
  • Some cash in small notes for autos, stalls and tips
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
