Permits and documents

Chopta lies inside Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. Camping needs prior permission from the Forest Department, and camping in the open is reported as currently banned. A small fee is reported at check posts on the trek routes; Carry a photo ID.

Safety

By day
The Tungnath path is clear and busy in season. The final climb to Chandrashila is steep, and the altitude of 3,600 to 4,000 m can tire unacclimatised walkers.
At night
There is no mains electricity in the Chopta area and it gets very cold after dark. Do not trek or drive at night.
Solo women
Stay in an established camp or lodge and walk in daylight, when other trekkers are on the path.
Roads
Mountain roads from Rishikesh are prone to landslides in the monsoon. In winter, reach Chopta in daylight only, as snow can close the road short of the village.
Emergency numbers
112 (all emergencies)

Practical

Mobile network
Patchy. Jio, Airtel, Vodafone and BSNL are reported to work in some spots only.
ATMs and cash
None at Chopta or Tungnath. The last ATM is at Ukhimath and may not always work, so carry cash.
Fuel
No petrol pump at Chopta. The nearest are at Ukhimath or Gopeshwar.
Medical
The nearest government hospital is at Ukhimath, about 30 km away.

Coverage maps: Jio · Airtel · Vi · BSNL. Report a problem

Accessibility

Seniors
Chopta itself is on the road, but Tungnath is a steady 3.5 km climb to about 3,680 m.
Children
Fit older children can manage the Tungnath walk in the main season. Carry warm clothing in every month.
Wheelchair users
Not suitable. The sights are reached by steep walking paths and facilities are basic.

Unless a sight is described as accessible, assume it is not step-free.

Culture and responsible travel

  • Tungnath is an active Shiva shrine and one of the Panch Kedar temples; dress modestly and follow the priests' instructions.
  • Only vegetarian food is served at Tungnath.
  • The area is a wildlife sanctuary: do not camp without permission, light fires or leave litter on the meadows.
  • There is no mains electricity, so expect limited charging and hot water.

What to pack

  • Photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence); hotels and permits ask for it
  • Proper winter wear: a heavy jacket, thermals, gloves and a cap
  • Waterproof shoes with grip if you go in the snow months
  • Walking shoes with a good grip, a small daypack and a refillable water bottle
  • Clothes that cover shoulders and knees, and socks for hot stone floors where shoes come off. Some temples do not allow phones or bags, so carry little
  • Enough cash for the whole stay, a power bank and offline maps
  • Your regular medicines, plus basics for stomach upsets, headaches and cuts
